Symphony Orchestra, Paul Tobey The Road to Santiago Suite

Symphony Orchestra premiere of “The Road to Santiago Suite” – Featuring a nine piece suite for piano and symphony orchestra. Inspired by the legend of the Templar Nights, the Suite was composed by Canadian concert pianist and jazz composer Paul Tobey while he walked 850 km across Northern Spain for 60 days. As a modern composer, he carried a laptop and 2 octave keyboard on the ancient Road to Santiago which lays directly under the milky way.

Paul Tobey composed 22 works, and one complete symphony during his composing quest which was to be performed by the local symphony in Astorga Spain if he completed it during his pilgrimmage. He did complete it. But, upon his arrival to Astorga, it was clear the orchestra was not ready to perform it.

Instead, Paul, his wife Nancy, and cameraman Drew Dekker jumped into a rented car and searched for the ancient order of the Benedictine Monks nestled inside the walls of Santo Domingo de Silos. Paul wanted to hear the live sounds of the Gregorian Chanting Monks that have preserved the ritual of chant since the 11th century. It would largely influence his entire Suite.

Upon his arrival to Canada, it would take more than 2 years before the Road to Santiago Suite – A Journey Through Spain would make it’s way before a live audience. The suite debuts with the Brantford Symphony Orchestra on Feb. 18th 2007.
