Bernard Primeau Montreal Jazz Veteran Dies

News of Bernard’s death this morning comes as a bit of a shock to Nancy and I! A veteran jazz drummer, Bernard was almost a jazz institution in Montreal. I know that he was very well liked by presenters and in touring circles. He toured and played consistantly, and I think was an excellent example of how a jazz musician could create and sustain a solid jazz career in the Canadian Jazz Industry. I spent 15 years of my early jazz career in Montreal, and I can remember hopping in and out of Montreal clubs where most often Bernard would be leading somewhere on drums. I even played a couple of gigs with him.He was still young, only 67…and set to release his new jazz album today. Bernard was part of my musical mapping and I’m truly hopeful that Bernard knew that he has inspired many young artists. Most importantly, he lived with purpose doing what he loved. That is the highest form of inspiration.

Our family offers its deepest condolences to Bernard’s family, loved ones, friends and fellow jazzers. You’ll be in our prayers today.
